Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter for glaze
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla.
  4. Alternately add the dry mixture and buttermilk to the butter-sugar mix, starting and ending with flour.
  5. Spread batter into the prepared pan and bake for 22–25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely before glazing.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown. Whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla; adjust consistency with milk if necessary.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
