Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, minced garlic, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place them on a lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
  5. While the meatballs bake, heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sugar; cook until soft and caramelized (15-20 minutes).
  6. Sprinkle flour over the onions, stir well, then gradually add beef broth while stirring constantly. Let simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Once meatballs are baked, add them to the sauce along with Worcestershire sauce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Top each meatball with shredded Gruyère cheese before serving.
